Diseases of potato and their Management:By taking photos of diseased looking leaves with this technique, this app will confirm in real time whether the leaf is getting damaged or not. The farmer will come to know in time that his potato crop may be damaged.

Researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi (IIT Mandi) have made a great innovation to detect diseases in the potato crop. Researchers have developed a technique based on artificial intelligence, through which diseases can be detected using pictures of the leaves of potato plants.
In this research conducted in collaboration with the Central Potato Research Institute, Shimla, Artificial Intelligence was used to detect the diseased part in the leaves. This research study has been published in the research journal Plant Phenomics.
This research was done in collaboration with Central Potato Research Institute (CPRI) Shimla under the supervision of Dr Srikant Srinivasan, Associate Professor, School of Computing and Electrical Engineering, IIT Mandi, in which Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology can detect diseased parts of leaves. Success has been achieved.
Diseases of potato and their Management :disease will be detected in time
Generally, there is a disease called blight in potato crop. If this disease is not stopped on time, then the entire crop gets spoiled within a week. To investigate this, experts or agricultural scientists have to go to the fields. After examining there very closely, this disease is detected.
Now after the development of this new technology, only the photo of the leaves will be able to know whether the crop is diseased or not. After checking through this, farmers will know that the crop is going to be damaged and they will be able to save the crop by using pesticides in time.
Developed as a mobile app
The computational tool developed by IIT Mandi can detect the damaged part in the pictures of potato leaves. Researchers are working on turning this device into a smartphone application for more practical use.
Mobile app will work like this
On taking photos of diseased looking leaves from this mobile app, this app will confirm in real time whether the leaf is getting damaged or not. The farmer will come to know in time that his potato crop may be damaged. In such a situation, they will be able to know when to spray to prevent disease, so that the yield is not spoiled. Also, don’t waste money for the fungus killer.
What do experts say?
According to the research team, the potato has been the cause of the great famine in the history of the world in the mid-19th century, which killed more than one million people in Ireland and put the last nail in the coffin of the Irish language.
The reason for this was that the potato was diseased. Shrikant Srinivasan, Associate Professor, School of Computing and Engineering, IIT, Mandi, said, “Whifting of leaves is a common disease in the potato plant. This disease can destroy the entire crop in a week under favorable conditions.
Diseases of potato and their Management Horticulture experts will not be needed
“In India, as is the case with most developing countries, the disease is identified by trained personnel on field visits. This is tedious and impractical, especially for remote areas, as it requires horticulturists who are unable to reach the fields.” Researcher ‘Jo Johnson’ at IIT Mandi said that with this new discovery, It can help to overcome this problem and a smartphone can be a useful tool in this regard.
