Dragon Fruit Cultivation in India: There is increasing interest among farmers regarding the cultivation of dragon fruit grown in many states including Gujarat, West Bengal, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Odisha. It is also becoming a good source of income for the farmers. The scientific name of dragon fruit is ‘Hyloseresundatus’, but the state government in Gujarat has named it ‘Kamalam’. Since the fruit has lotus-like spikes and petals, it is also called ‘Kamalam’.

Since the encouragement from the state government, interest in its production has increased rapidly in North Gujarat, Saurashtra and South Gujarat. This is the reason why a farmer from Vavdi village in Bhavnagar district has earned Rs 3.5 lakh by cultivating dragon fruit on just four bighas of land, spending less water and less.

Best time to plant dragon fruit in India beginning in the 1990s

Although dragon fruit is mainly grown in countries like Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, United States of America and Vietnam, but now India is also not behind in the cultivation of dragon fruit. Thanks to Indian farmers, dragon fruit was produced in India in the early 1990s and began to be grown in home gardens. With the increase in the use of dragon fruit for cultivation by farmers of different states, its popularity increased rapidly.

Three varieties of dragon fruit, cultivated in these states of the country

There are three main varieties of dragon fruit. This includes white flesh, pink colored fruit, red fleshed, pink colored fruit and yellow colored fruit with white pulp. At present, dragon fruit farming is done in many states of the country. It is mostly grown in Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Odisha, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It requires less water for cultivation and can be grown in a variety of soils.

The cost of a plant is Rs 48

Farmer Rameshbhai Makwana of Vavdi village in Bhavnagar district of Saurashtra is cultivating dragon fruit with less water than traditional farming. Rameshbhai brought dragon fruit plants from Jamnagar and planted them. The cost of one plant of dragon fruit is Rs.48 and at present the fruits come 15 months after planting. Rameshbhai has earned Rs 3.5 lakh annually by cultivating dragon fruit in four bighas of land.

Best time to plant dragon fruit in India Income up to Rs 1.10 lakh per bigha

Rameshbhai told that he has been doing dragon fruit crop for the last one or two years in Bhavnagar district. Avania, Talaja, Dihor, Trapaj, Sehore and Palitana dragon fruit are cultivated in Bhavnagar. He told that there are three types of dragon fruit cultivated in pink, red and white colors. The income from this fruit is up to Rs 1.10 lakh per bigha.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned dragon fruit cultivation in the arid Kutch region of Gujarat in his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ program on All India Radio in July 2020. He also offered dragon fruit to farmers of Kutch to ensure India’s self-sufficiency in production. Congratulations on farming.
